ELK BREWING COMING TO COMSTOCK PARK IN JULY -

Elk Brewing is a Brew Pub currently located in the Wealthy Street Business District of Grand Rapids, Michigan.  However, Elk Brewing has plans to open a 2nd Brew Pub in the Comstock Park area.  The opening is to take place sometime in July of this year.  Elk Brewing started with a love story between the owners, Eric and Lisa Karns.  Lisa bought Eric a brewing kit.  His love for brewing went as far as making his own beer for the couple’s wedding.  Before long, Elk Brewing grew from a hobby to not just one but now two Brew Pubs.  They offer a variety of beers ranging from 4.5% to 9% ABV.  Their popular year-round beers include:  Extra Pale, ESB, Porter, Rye IPA, and Scotch Ale.  They also have Specialty and Seasonal beers as well.  West Side Beer looks forward to Elk Brewing as an addition to an already extensive beer portfolio.

New Year, New Beer, New Brewery

“A Beer for Every Palate” is our latest brewery’s vision.  Home brewers turned owners, Nick and Krista Looman had an inspiration to bring craft beer to downtown Newaygo where they have deep roots.  Newaygo County’s first microbrewery, Newaygo Brewing Co. is proudly being distributed in the Grand Rapids area on draft.  Newaygo Brewing Co. brews in the English tradition.  They think of their beer as the most drinkable beer that can be appreciated by every palate.

“We think of them as everyday drinkers. Our beers can be enjoyed after a long day, before an adventure, or just when you need some time to relax,” is stated on their website.  The hops they use are mellow, like a float down the Muskegon River.  A popular spot in the summer, 1000 or more people float down the Muskegon River every weekend.  What better place to relax and have a cool beer after a long day in the sun!

THE HISTORY OF THE “OLD BREWERY”

The building known as the “Old Brewery” was first completed in 1898 and was used to brew Petoskey Sparkle beer until 1915. According to a 1973 article in the Petoskey News, the Petoskey Brewing Company was originally owned by Frank and Garrett Fochtman, A. Bremmeyr and John Zaiger, who also acted as the Brewmaster.  Since closing in 1915, the brewery building has served as retail shops, as warehousing and perhaps even as a goat barn. It wasn’t until 2012, under the new ownership of and complete renovation by Patrick Dowd and Lou Gostinger, that beer once again flowed within the walls of the “Old Brewery”.

Petoskey Brewing will land in Grand Rapids, November 9th, 2015.  Coming next to Kalamazoo Nov. 16th, 2015, Lansing November 23rd, and finally Romulus, December 7th.  The styles first being brought into our market are, Horny Monk a Belgium Dubble, reddish, malty with a complex Belgian Style ale.  Sparkle Lager, the original Petoskey Sparkle Lager, made in 1898 until 1915, brought back to life in 2012, a clean, easy drinking lager.  Finally Mind's Eye PA, a burnt copper color with a giant hop aroma. Rich caramel malt and red wheat balance the dry bitter finish.
