Pairing: Horrifying Vintage Holiday Meals with Beer

Nothing says Christmas time like copious amounts of unwanted traditional treats to choke down. Buzzfeed took it further with their top list of horrifying vintage holiday dishes. In case you are intrigued by the combination of jell-o with tuna, jello-with turkey or jell-o with green olives, here is a select list of dishes perfectly paired with beer.

 

 

Tuna Christmas Tree Paired with Deschutes Mirror Pond Pale Ale

There’s nothing like discovering your elf on the shelf whipped up some tuna salad adorned with parsley, jell-o “ornaments” served with a side of stale crackers in the middle of the night. To really celebrate this molded atrocity, pair it with Deschutes Mirror Pond Pale Ale. Light bitterness from the hops combat the sweet jell-o while cutting through the creamy concoction while the body is light enough to not overpower the tree, which may or may not turn out to be edible.

 

Frozen Fruitcake Salad paired with Hoegaarden

Picture all the reasons fruitcake is bad. Now, add in some spinach and what appears to be a creamy cheese, although in this case mayo isn’t too off of a guess, either. That is the quivering mound of fruitcake salad. Pair it with Hoegaarden, a Weisbier. The beer’s creamy mouthfeel and bright nose are sure to complement, if not somewhat hide, the sweetness from the cake-salad.

 

Molded Pate Cheese Balls paired with Arcadia Ales Nut Brown

The name says enough in regards to this dish’s flavor profile. Just imagine hands lovingly mushing and molding liver and cheese together into globe-like shapes then dumping them into a mold and adding jell-o. Jell-o used to be its own category on the food pyramid, apparently. Arcadia Ales Nut Brown ale has a steady malt bone that adds a roastiness to the cheesed mold and pairs well with the meatiness of the liver.

 

 

Noel Glazed Ham Paired with New Belgium Trippel 

What this ham is glazed with remains a mystery of epic proportions. Best bets are on a spreadable cheese or mayo. However, jell-o is definitely included in this dish. How else would it look so festive? Drink New Belgium Brewing Co. Trippel to highlight the sweet tones of the baked ham while simultaneously scrubbing off any thick residue left behind by the mystery glaze.

 

Holiday Vegetable Loaf Paired with Oskar Blues Mama's Little Yella Pils 

Nothing says the holidays like a loaf. A healthy alternative dish to bring to a feast, this has everything; cranberry-shaped whales, apples, broccoli, mashed potatoes, tomatoes and mystery loaf. Pair a can of Mama’s Little Yella Pils from Oskar Blues Brewery with this free-form salad experiment. The light body won’t take away from the salad-ish ingredients while the grassy hops and bready malt character might actually enhance this dish. Maybe. Anything is possible

Cask Ale 101

You’re enjoy an evening out and are happy to celebrate it with a night out. Your beer arrives. Its near room temperature and flat…and perfect. It’s a cask ale and it’s becoming increasingly popular in craft bars around the country.

 

 

The cask ale hails back to days of yore in England when placing beer in a cask for secondary fermentation was the norm. Cask ale, also called real ale, is beer that is placed into a cask after primary fermentation to undergo secondary fermentation before being directly pulled from the cask or firkin. It usually is usually stored for just a few days to rest and allow solid particles to drop. Because the beer undergoes secondary fermentation in the container it can take on the characteristics of the wooden cask or of any additional flavorings added to the cask (cacao nibs and hops are examples) for secondary fermentation. This means that the final product is sort of like those mystery suckers you used to get at the bank…you know it’s going to be typical sucker sweet but the actual flavor profile isn’t revealed until you unwrap it, or in this case, tap the firkin. These ales generally are stored and served at a warmer temperature in order to ensure the yeast does not go dormant.

 

 

Additionally, firkins are not hooked up to a bar system in the same way as your typical keg. Instead, you have to use a hammer to punch in the bunghole, which is the horizontal spout located on the side of the firkin to draw out the beer. There is no separate tank to provide extra carbonation. To draw the beer out of the firkin, either a special hand pump system is used, with the firkin being stored in the cellar, or it is laid out at the bar and directly served using a simple gravity tap. With such a system, the cask is susceptible to oxygenation, which means the cask ale’s shelf life is shortened, although the oxygen can provide a nice softening effect on the beer.

 

Cask ales are a fantastic way to continuously explore the world of beer and all of its varying components. Make sure to try out a taste next time you see a firkin up at the bar.

As the year comes to an end, it’s time to celebrate all the fantastic beers we’ve discovered over the course of the year. Much like the much-anticipated pop music mashup, each style is a deliciously good way to remember the year individually, although we don’t suggest mashing them all together into a liquid hot mess to choke down.

 

 

New Belgium Brewing Co. Snapshot

Snapshot Wheat hallmarked the spring with its bright and tangy flavor. This unfiltered wheat ale arrived during the throes of the Polar Vortex, bringing with it a bright, citrusy hope for the future. Since then it has yet to disappoint with each tart sip.

 

Samuel Adams Rebel IPA

The release of Rebel IPA dared us to try a new IPA from one of the godfathers of craft beer. The IPA showcased the scope of Samuel Adam’s brewing prowess with its well-balanced hop-forward presence, making it the second best-selling IPA in the country in just a few short months.

 

 

Stone Brewing Co. EnjoyBy IPA

The EnjoyBy IPA series from Stone Brewing highlighted the educational component of drinking, in this case the sooner you drink it, the better. Brewed to be consumed within thirty days, each style in the EnjoyBy series showcases the unique characteristics of the hops that result in such a freshly bitter beer.

 

 

Arcadia Rapunzel Wheat IPA

Arcadia Ales helped bring a newly popular style to the Michigan consciousness with Rapunzel Wheat IPA. The ale combined the creamy and smooth mouthfeel of a wheat beer with bright citrus hop bitterness. Representing the Michigan beer landscape even more, the beer incorporates locally-sourced hops.

 

Right Brain Brewery Smooth Operator

The cream ale from Right Brain Brewery came just in time for summer, providing an exceptionally flavored, light-bodied “lawnmower” beer option for the Michigan craft beer sector. The easy drinking beer in the 16-ounce can soon became (and remained) a top hit for those who like to laze the day away with a cold one in hand.

 

Traveler Beer Jolly Shandy

The newest beer project from Alan Newman, Traveler Beer, brought a brand new option to the Grand Rapids area with its craft shandy lineup. When Jacko, a pumpkin shandy, showed up on the scene just in time for witching season, beer drinkers learned how innovative the style could be.

 

Shocktop Shockolate

Roasted cocoa nibs brought a rich, roasted flavor to this Belgian wheat style ale. The style came in just time for a decadent chocolate treat during the cold season.

 

 

Deschutes Brewery

After much anticipation, the 6th largest craft brewery in the country brought its wares to the West Michigan market. Black Butte Porter, the country's best-selling porter, Mirror Pond Pale Ale, Inversion IPA and Jubelale all launched the market in October. After a few months of getting to know these well-balanced and tasty beers, new seasonals and beer styles will soon be available as Michigan continues to get to know (and love) one of the best nationally-ranked craft breweries. 

 

Perrin Brewing Killing Craft

After two long years of anticipation, Perrin Brewing launched its first packaged beer on the Michigan beer scene with the super limited bottle series. The Killing Craft series began with the bourbon barrel aged duo, Kill Em All and With Kindness, which started off this series that is focused on highlighting the artistry of crafting beer.

Back in the day, I took Halloween very seriously. It was the candy holiday and my family prepared the proper way – by coming up with ridiculous costumes and stealing pillow cases off the beds to use for carrying back our haul. Now, as a grown up, I’ve been forced out of the trick or treating game and beer has replaced the pillow case as the candy accompaniment. Chosen wisely, these two make perfect pairings.

 

 

New Belgium Rampant IPA with sour gummy worms

A perfect example of matching strength to strength, Rampant Imperial IPA from New Belgium Brewing pairs well with the sour gummy worms. The sweet and tart flavors stand up to the bold and bitter brew while the juicy and tropical fruit hop notes complement the gummies’ varied flavors.

 

 

Deschutes Black Butte Porter with malt balls

Milk chocolate coating meets chocolate malt for this candy pairing. The porter is light bodied enough to not overwhelm the palate and the carbonation and dry finish help to clean the tongue between bites.

 

 

Oskar Blues Old Chub Nitro with peanut butter cups

What goes better than chocolate and peanut butter? More chocolate with peanut butter, of course. The smooth and creamy brew can be enjoyed straight from the can. The dark roasted malt is slightly sweet and bitter, perfect to serve as a side to the rich and thick peanut butter chocolate candy.  

 

Samuel Adams Cream Stout with Snickers

The caramel, peanuts and creamy chocolate in Snickers gets to take the main stage for this pairing, with Samuel Adams Cream Stout serving as a refresher. The stout is a dessert itself but proves to be light enough to let the creamy filling and bold chocolate peanut combo shine through.

 

 

Perrin Kona Brown with Kit Kat bars

Sweet milk chocolate and crunchy wafers are given a caffeine boost with this brown ale brewed with locally roasted coffee. The coffee brings out the roasted malt quality which adds another layer of chocolate complexity to the candy, while serving as a base to balance out the sweetness of the treat. 

New Belgium Accumulation

The snow may not be piling on yet but you can still accumulate some seasonal white stuff with Accumulation White IPA.

 

 

The returning seasonal from New Belgium Brewing Co. is now available for the cold months. To become acquainted with this white IPA, you start with a brilliant golden pour that has just a touch of haze. Topping it off is a heaping head of white foam, much like the snow that will soon be piling up. Bring the glass closer, right by the ol’ schnoz, and take a couple of sniffs. That wonderful smell? That’s the aroma of Accumulation – full of tropical and citrus hops, which can even be reminiscent of fond childhood memories chowing down on fruity pebbles. Now that the prep work is done, take a rewarding slug of the brew. The bold bitterness from a heavy hop dosage should go down smooth, thanks to a wheat creamy mouthfeel. There should be a light caramel malt that provides a stable body to support the hops, as well as a slight fruity sweetness.  The finish is incredibly crisp, leaving the senses just begging for another sip, so go ahead and have another.

Oh my gourd! It’s gourd season!

The pumpkin is back and in a big way, possibly the best way. It’s back in the beer way. Pumpkin infused, flavored and named beers are surrounding us currently. Pumpkin beers are the “it” beers of the season, which is perfect timing with World Bread Day tomorrow. Slate Magazine knows the power of this trifecta of vegetable, booze and carbs, which all are combined in this recipe reblogged from the site. So pop open a bottle of Shock Top Pumpkin Wheat, take a swig and then get to baking.

 

 

 

Pumpkin-Beer Bread
Yield: One 9-inch loaf (About 12 servings)
Time: 1¼ hours

Oil or butter for greasing the pan
1¼ cup all-purpose flour
½ cup whole-wheat flour
1 teaspoon baking powder
½ teaspoon baking soda
½ teaspoon salt
1½ teaspoons ground cinnamon
½ teaspoon ground ginger
Pinch ground nutmeg
Pinch ground allspice
3 tablespoons unsalted butter
1 cup pumpkin purée
1 cup brown sugar
2 large eggs
1 cup Shock Top Pumpkin Wheat

 



1. Heat the oven to 350°F. Grease a 9-inch loaf pan. Combine the flours, baking powder, baking soda, salt, cinnamon, ginger, nutmeg, and allspice in a large bowl.

2. Melt the butter in a medium saucepan over low heat (or in a medium bowl in the microwave). Remove from the heat. Stir in the pumpkin and brown sugar, then stir in the eggs. Finally, stir in the Shock Top Pumpkin Wheat. Add the pumpkin mixture to the dry ingredients and stir just until combined, then transfer the batter to the greased pan.

3. Bake until a toothpick inserted into the center of the loaf comes out clean, about 1 hour. Cool thoroughly, then slice and serve. (Leftover pumpkin bread can be wrapped in foil or plastic wrap and stored at room temperature for up to a few days.)

International Coffee Day

Coffee, coffee, coffee.

It’s International Coffee Day and there is no better way to celebrate than with a brown ale infused with roasted coffee flavor. Kona Brown from Perrin Brewing Co. brings the caffeine, using locally roasted coffee harvested off of the Hawaiian island of Kona.  The ale has a vibrant coffee aroma with slight chocolate malt undertones while the beer, itself, pours a deep mahogany with a tan head. The beer has a medium-light body with a rich coffee taste that is bolstered by roasted malt, adding a bit of toast flavor, with a light touch of hops for balance.

 

 

 

 

This beer may be perfect to celebrate the unofficial holiday and to also bring the creativity level to the top level of productivity. According to studies, coffee boosts productivity, which is often a thing that is lacking on Mondays. Meanwhile, alcohol (that thing found in beer) is useful for getting the creative juices flowing. Combined in Kona Brown, this ale brings a one-two punch of creativity and productivity.

There is a historical aspect to Kona Brown, as well. Kona (other than Puerto Rico) is where the beginning of U.S. coffee began. It started with the Reverend Samuel Ruggles who brought coffee to the island of Kona back in 1828. He is featured on the label for Kona Brown as a nod to history.

So, in a nod to history, for the sake of International Coffee Day and as a way to boost your Monday, raise a Kona Brown and tip back a few.

This past Friday, as part of the Global Be(er) Responsibility Day, Budweiser released it's newest ad campaign. The focus for the ad isn't on drinking beer or enjoying beer, instead it's on the very serious reality to do so responsibly and make sure you come home to your waiting friends. 

 

 

West Side Beer Distributing employees rallied together for Global Be(er) Responsibility Day and met with customers to discuss the importance of requesting I.D., responsible drinking and designating a driver. Our goal is to break a Guinness World Record with the "Most Pledges Received for a Campaign." By the end of the year we hope to have engaged and encouraged enough sellers and servers to pledge their commitment to the serving responsibly. 

 

 

 

 

A Peak at Yeast

With a product made out of four simple ingredients, each component of a beer is equally important. That being said, yeast is definitely the soul of the beer. It is what takes simple ingredients and warps it into liquid perfection. Much like with sourdough bread, yeast can be cultivated so a brewery is able to develop their yeast strain, ensuring it is available for each new brew.

 

 

Adolphus Busch understood the important of quality ingredients stating “You can only make a good thing out of good products; therefore, stick to the motto that the best ingredient is not too good for our beer.” Anheuser Busch followed through on that motto when it came to yeast and did not underestimate the importance role yeast played in cultivating a flavorful beer. In fact, since 1876 Budweiser has used the same proprietary yeast strain in their iconic brew to ensure no matter the batch each sip is distinctly Budweiser good.

 

 

Budweiser’s commitment to its yeast strain is no accident – yeast can contribute over 600 separate compounds to a beer’s flavor and aroma. It does so by directly affecting the hops via absorption of iso-alpha acids and in the way it metabolizes malt.

Welcoming Deschutes Brewery

Today is a great day in the world of beer for Michigan – Deschutes Brewery announced their intent to distribute in Michigan, beginning on October 6th in Grand Rapids, Kalamazoo and Lansing. As the 6th largest craft brewery in the country, Deschutes beers have been long anticipated in the mitten state. The brewery will initially release Black Butte Porter, Mirror Pond Pale Ale, Inversion IPA and Jubelale.

Deschutes Brewery Beers Coming to Michigan

Bend, Oregon brewery’s craft beers will be available for fans in Western Michigan the
first week of October, with launch events scheduled for October 8-11

 

August 20, 2014 – Bend, Oregon – Deschutes Brewery announced today its craft beers will be available in Michigan beginning October 6th. The Oregon-based brewery will partner with West Side Beer Distributing for distribution of its beers in the Grand Rapids, Kalamazoo and Lansing areas. 

 

Stacy Denbow, expansion manager for the brewery, said, “We’ve seen a great amount of excitement leading up to our Michigan launch, our last major expansion for the 2014 year. Beer is slated to be available October 6th in the three western Michigan cities, with launch events scheduled for October 8-11th. Initially, Deschutes Brewery will offer Mirror Pond Pale Ale, Black Butte Porter, the nation’s number one selling craft porter, Inversion IPA, and its winter seasonal, Jubelale. The beers will be available in 6-packs (12-oz bottles) and draft.

 

Denbow continued, “We’ve been preparing for expanding our distribution area over the past few years, but we always want to make sure we can provide adequate supply to our entire footprint. We are keeping a close eye on capacity, and that’s why we are focusing only on the western portion of Michigan at this point.”

 

Deschutes launched in Ohio, Kentucky, central and western Pennsylvania, and Wisconsin earlier this year. The western portion of Michigan rounds out the brewery’s geographic expansion for the year.

Shark Week: Movies and Beer Pairing

My favorite time of the year has returned. Shark Week is back in all its jawtastic, bloody gore and glory. From the beginning, Shark Week and I were fated to be together. My childhood best friend’s initials spell out J.A.W. for one. That same friend also convinced a very young and naïve version of me that bull sharks could and did lurk in the waters of Lake Superior since she read that some sharks could swim into freshwater. It was a terrifying and wonderful time that laid the foundation for my adoration of shark week.  To make the week even better, take a break from fiction, or semi-fiction, and rejoice in completely preposterous shark themed movies paired with a brew for mental lubrication.

The fruit is not only an favorite American produce, it’s gone so far as to infiltrate our language. Now, the apple is reaching even further with beer. Jacko Shandy

Traveler Beer Co. is out with the newest release, Jacko, a pumpkin shandy. Jacko Shandy epitomizes harvest season by representing grains, fruit and vegetables in every sip as a wheat ale brewed with real pumpkin and a fresh squeeze of lemon citrus.

 

 

The shandy pours a dark, orange hue with a pervasive, mouth-watering pumpkin aroma. The beer is medium-bodied with a creamy mouthfeel that serves as a jumping point for pumpkin pie in beer form, with a hint of malty sweetness. The beer clocks in at 4.4% ABV and 7 IBUs.

 

That’s the beer, now let’s talk the name. Jacko pays homage to the Irish story about “Stingy Jack,” the origin myth of the jack-o-lantern. The story goes that there was once a cheapskate in Ireland called Jack who drank with the devil. Drinking with the devil never ends well. But this Jack thought differently so he convinced the devil to turn himself into a coin to pay for their drinks. He then tossed the coin by a silver cross so the devil was unable to turn himself back into his devilish self. Only on the condition that the devil wouldn’t bother Jack and that he wouldn’t take his soul to hell did Jack free the devil. Pretty smart, except once Jack did die his unsavory antics kept him out of heaven and then the devil refused him at hell’s door, as a part of their previous pact. So now Jack carries around a coal from hell placed in a hollowed out turnip and wanders the earth endlessly. To ward off evil the Irish would hollow out their own turnips and place a light inside. When they migrated to America they switched out the turnip for the pumpkin.

 

So goes the story of “Stingy Jack,” who became jack-o-lantern and now is Jacko,  the shandy from Traveler Beer Co. 

 

Happy Belgium Day! Let's eat some waffles

The World Cup is finally over and hopefully we’ve healed somewhat from the USA V. Belgium game. Now we can return to our normal Belgium loving selves and celebrate National Belgium Day by whipping up some beery Belgium waffles.

 

 

 

Stella Artois takes what could be some basic and bland waffles to a whole new yeasty level. Thanks to its light body, clean malty body and crisp finish it doesn’t turn breakfast into a boozed out session. Instead, the addition of a cup of beer adds depth and body to the simple dish. The yeast and malt do wonders for the quick bread while the alcohol is cooked out and lets the flavors meld together and shine on their own. Pairing it with a Stella Artois ensures a perfect complementary pairing for the meal. Thanks to Serious Eats for a delish recipe and foodporn.

 

 

 

Ingredients

 

  • 2 ¼ cups flour
  • 1 tsp salt
  • 4 tsp baking powder
  • 1 ¼ tsp baking soda
  • 2 tsp sugar
  • 5 T butter
  • 1 ½ tsp vanilla
  • ¾ cup milk
  • 1 cup Stella Artois Lager
  • 2 eggs

 

 

Directions

1. Whisk together dry ingredients.

 

2. In a medium pot melt butter then add milk and beer. Heat until warm.  Remove from heat.

 

3. In another bowl whisk eggs and vanilla together. Pour warm milk and beer mixture into the bowl. Mix eggs and beer and milk mixture well.

 

4. Pour wet ingredients into a well formed in the dry ingredients bowl. Whisk until smooth.

Pour into greased waffle maker. Cook until perfectly brown.

 

 

 

Served best with a nice side of bacon, a dollop of butter, dripping with maple syrup and a perfectly poured chalice of Stella Artois. Gezonheid!

 

 

 

Stella Artois Beer Battered Fish

Apparently polar vortexes are possible during the summertime, which probably means we should all start preparing for hibernation by consuming as many calories as possible. It’s the smart thing to do. Beer battered chips and fish is just the dish to do the trick. The fish still lends a summery aspect to the dish while the beer provides crispiness to the batter.  A light lager, such as Stella Artois, works best in a beer batter for all your frying needs. The beer adds three major components to your batter – carbonation, alcohol and foam – all of which ensure a light a crispy crust for a better batter.  This recipe for beer battered fish and garlic lemon aioli from Something Savory is great for whipping up a simple meal. Don’t forget the chips and a Stella Artois for a perfect pairing.

 

 

 

Beer Batter Recipe

  • 1 12 ounce bottle of Stella Artois
  • 2 cups flour
  • Seasonings to taste. I really like a bit of paprika, pepper and salt mixed up together.
  • 1 tsp. baking powder
  • Whitefish filets

 

Directions

Whisk beer batter ingredients together in bowl and then let chill for 15 minutes. Next, heat up about an inch of oil in a pan. You will know it is ready when a bit of batter crisps up when dropped in the oil. Dip whitefish filets into batter then lay down in oil. Cook until golden then flip sides and repeat. Once it’s done cooking, place on paper towel to soak up access oil. Serve with a slice of lemon, garlic lemon aioli (recipe below), chips and a Stella Artois or four.

Garlic Lemon Aioli Recipe

  • ½ cup mayonnaise
  • 2 garlic cloves, minced
  • 1 T lemon juice
  • 1 T olive oil
  • ½ tsp. lemon zest
  • Salt, pepper, thyme and parsley to taste.

Mix all ingredient together and serve on side of beer batter fish.

As a part of its Folds of Honor partnership Budweiser is rolling out the Just Blip It app, which will take user interaction to decide on each state’s portion of the $1.5 million raised by Budweiser for the foundation this year.

Folds of Honor: Budweiser Helping America's Families

Once again Budweiser is continuing its partnership with the Folds of Honor Foundation to raise money for families of fallen or wounded soldiers. From May 5 to July 4 Anheuser-Busch will be donating a portion of profit from every case of Budweiser sold to the nonprofit. This initiative by Anheuser-Busch has helped raise over $10 million in support of the organization since since partnering with Folds of Honor. This year, Budweiser will raise more than $3 million in educational scholarships that will go towards military families.

 

“Our partnership with Folds of Honor is helping to make a difference in the lives of families whose loved ones have made the ultimate sacrifice to protect the freedoms we all hold so dear,” said Lori Shambro, Director of Budweiser.

 

To commemorate the ongoing partnership, Budweiser packaging will, once again, feature a red, white and blue limited edition patriotic look. It serves as a great reminder that in addition to the fun that comes from grabbing some buds, each brew (including draught) is helping support deserving families. In the food world, Bread and beer could be cousins. Both are works of scientific art that turn sugar into an agent of change – either creating alcohol or carbon dioxide. Whichever process is undertaken the result can be quite delicious. Some very smart people considered the similarities between the two goods and combined them together to create an even tastier edible. Beer bread creates the perfect gluten on gluten pairing. Try it out with an incredibly simple recipe from Half Baked Harvest that uses only 5 ingredients, including a bottle of Budweiser, for a dish that highlights how fantastic a classic like Budweiser or bread can be – especially when paired together.

 

 

5 Ingredient Budweiser Beer Bread Recipe

 

3 c. flour

4 1/2 tsp. baking powder

¼ c. brown sugar, loosely packed

12 ounces Budweiser

½ tsp. salt

 

 

Directions

Prep for baking by preheating the oven to 375 degrees and greasing a 9.5 loaf pan. Combine the flour, brown sugar, baking powder and a pinch of salt into a mixing bowl. Pour in the beer and stir with a mixing spoon until just combined. Pour the batter into the loaf pan. Bake for 45-55 minutes or until the top of the bread is lightly browned and the middle is set. Allow to sit for 15 minutes then dig in. Pop the top off a cold Bud and slice into the warm bread for a perfect pairing.

Cinco de Mayo is upon us, which means its time to celebrate Taco Tuesday a day early and get down on some taco and beer pairings.  

 
First, let's set the stage for this pairing. These tacos are all hypothetically topped with the basic toppings cilantro, onion and lime trio while each taco begins with on a double layer of warm corn tortilla. With those staples on each taco, the focus is on the featured meats flavor for creating a perfect beer pairing. 
 
Carnitas Tacos and New Belgium Fat Tire
 
Carnitas are pig parts braised then pan fried for a crispy, tender combination. New Belgium Fat Tire is an amber ale with a toasted malty sweetness that complements the carmelized meat. The rise of the shelfie has infiltrated beer culture. As part of the celebration of craft beer, the Brewers Association enlisted the help of breweries from all 50 states to create a montage of beer shelfies.

It goes beyond the basic beer porn type of photos seen across social media and flips the camera (or smartphone) around to show the mysterious imbiber of the brew in their natural habitat. The Brewnited We Stand campaign, by using the shelfie platform, is able to showcase how diverse, fun and weird the beer community can be. All by having people take pictures of themselves with their beers of choice. On top of that, it’s a great campaign that is able to visually represent the breweries’ cultures in a very personal way – through the people behind the brew. What better way to learn about the many breweries and their delicious product, both near and far, than by viewing up close photos of the brewery folk having fun working and drinking?

Growing up, my attempts at playing soccer resulted in less than spectacular results. I kept on playing, though, because is was fun to run up and down a field. There were excuses for my feeble skill set. I really do have terrible depth perception.

 

However, the Budweiser Rise As One Vice series of small clips showcasing the power soccer can have in someone's world (and the effort they put into the sport) has taken away any excuse I have used in the past. take this episode, titled Football is Believing, that tells the story of a soccer team in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil that plays soccer without the use of sight. Instead, they use a special soccer ball built with rattles in it to play the game. It's incredible to see the level of sportsmanship and the willpower that can come from one game.

KCCO beer has landed in Grand Rapids! Get ready to have some fun way the Chive KCCO parties. Not sure what or how to do so? Here are a few quick steps to make sure you max out the moment and enjoy or throw a fantastic time.
 
 

1. Drink KCCO beer. 

This is sort of a given but still necessary to include. KCCO beer is a black lager brewed via Resignation Brewery, a part of Redhook Brewery. It is a black lager with toasty malt notes and a super smooth lager finish. 5.1% ABV 
 
 

2. Document the action. 

The saying "pics or it didn't happen" tends to ring true. Especially when it comes to sharing your KCCO experience with the Chive community. 
 
 

3. Include facial hair. 

Nothing says Chive on quite like a well manicured beard or mustache. The fake variety are accepted, as well. 
 
 

4. Sharing is caring. 

KCCO beer is limited. Don't hog it to yourself, share it with your friends! Same goes for those aforementioned pictures. Post them up online to show off the fun.

Beer is the Best. Ever.

Beer is most likely the best thing humanity has ever accomplished (I’m 99 percent positive on this). Yes, fire and the wheel helped out humankind immensely but do you reach for a nice pint of fire or wheel after a long day? No.

 

 

The appeal of beer can’t be denied. Remember that one time the government tried to make it illegal? Didn’t work out too well, which is why today Americans get to rejoice and celebrate the repeal of prohibition day (AKA Beer Day).  And that’s why on National Beer Day here’s a list of the ultimate (personally biased) reasons why beer rocks the sock’s off of civilization.

 

1.  You can drink it on a daily and moderate basis to live a longer life.

 

2. You can bathe in it for a spa –like skin treatment.

 

3. The variety is astounding – any kind of beer you want probably exists in some part of the world (or will soon). There’s quite possibly a special beer for everyone out there.

 

 

4. It is the perfect tangible example of the connectivity between agriculture, production and consumption. Sometimes beer recipes change because there is a hop shortage or a new beer is created due to a brewery mishap. These things aren’t hidden away, rather they are placed out there to further involve the consumer in the beautiful process that is beer making.

 

5. A beer a day keeps the doctor away.

 

6. It saved the world. Or at least that’s what I heard.

 

7. It makes food taste better. Whether it’s the perfect beer/food pairing or the beer is being used to marinate meat or enrich a soup – beer heightens the experience of eating.

 

8. Beer helped put Grand Rapids on the map. From a mid-sized city, Grand Rapids morphed into a hub of beer activity and is now a top tourist destination in the country and will be hosting the homebrewers’ national convention this summer.

 

9. Because grabbing a pint with a buddy after work sounds way better than getting a mug of hot cocoa or a goblet of wine. It just does.

Happy Opening Day, everyone! Enjoy the American tradition of baseball and beer with these top 5 opening day traditions.

 

1.       Playing hooky from work

The inexplicable sickness, the car problem, the random disappearance. Whatever your chosen method for skipping work is, Opening Day is when you perfect the skill of skipping work in the name of baseball. Of course the Wizard and Budweiser’s recent efforts (along with all thousands of signatures) have helped begin the process for a petition to make Opening Day a holiday. Until then, the rest of us will continue the long-held tradition of heading off to the stadium instead of the office on this day.

 

2.       Hot dogs

Fuel is required for all that baseball watching and celebration. Most often, that comes in the form of a hot dog. Or two. Or five. Coincidentally, hot dogs also pair perfectly with a beer. American lagers and pilsners act as a palate cleanser while allowing the dish’s flavors to take center stage.

 

 

3.       Clydesdales

The Budweiser Clydesdales are a symbol of Americana. Combined with the Opening Day ceremonies and parade, nothing feels more patriotic.

 

4.       Cracking open a cold one

The Traveler Beer Company began with a phone call between Alan Newman, founder of Magic Hat Brewing, and Jim Koch, founder of Boston Beer Company. That phone conversation begat the Alchemy and Science project, which then produced the Traveler Beer Company.

 

 

The Traveler Beer Company produces a new sort of adventure for the craft drinker – craft shandys. According to the Beer Traveler Company, the story of the shandy goes way back.

 

“The shandy tradition dates back to the 17th century and is typically beer mixed with a citrus-flavored soda or carbonated lemonade, ginger beer, ginger ale or cider. Today, English publicans pour a blend of traditional English ale with various lemon and lime beverages for their patrons though real lemons or limes are rarely used.” - Beer Traveler Co.

 

Alan Newman and company realized that in the craft beer community that was bursting with barrel aged brews and dank IPAs there was a surprising lack of any craft shandys. That’s when the Beer Traveler Company found its mission.

 

 

The first in the lineup turned into the brewery’s flagship, Curious Traveler, a malt wheat ale infused with lemon and lime puree, lending it a brilliant citrus aroma and taste. The additional options that are available throughout the Grand Rapids market are Time Traveler, which is a strawberry shandy that utilizes fresh strawberries to create a unique and sweet flavor, and Illusive Traveler, a grapefruit shandy that harnesses the bright citric flavor without the fruit’s bitterness.

Opening Day is around the corner! This is great news for all the baseball fans out there and for people like me who love a great excuse to eat more hot dogs. Plus, thanks to the efforts of Budweiser and all those signatures there is officially a petition out there to make Opening Day a national holiday, which means you should most definitely eat another hot dog in celebration.

Football heroes come alive with the new feature from the Budweiser “Rise As One” FIFA World Cup campaign. Today they released the first video installment, titled “Believe As One.” It’s a 60-second spot filmed in black and white that is enthralling.

 

 

 

The Budweiser Rise as One FIFA World Cup campaign has with a rhythm that strikes to your heartbeat and makes you (or maybe it’s just me…) really wish you were good at soccer/football. That’s the addictive part of this campaign, it directly taps into the meaning behind the FIFA World Cup, which is the feeling of pride, solidarity and competition that can be felt from every country and unifies them all together in one huge sport spectacular.

 

Seriously, there is something about the World Cup that compels even the ambivalent to suddenly morph into diehard fans glued to a TV and avidly screaming on their chosen team. Even I get sucked into the game and my only experience with soccer amounts to playing for a few years as a kid and then joining a coed team one year where my job was to run up and down the field the entire time and not touch the ball. Still, whenever the World Cup goes on, I go through the team rosters, picking my chosen team based off of the players’ overall attractiveness and then proceeding root for them as if they’ve always been my heroes.

 

Then there are those fans that are true lovers of the sport, or as Budweiser calls them Football heroes. These heroes take their sport to the next level by infectiously sharing that passion with their communities. Actually, it’s this ability that gets them to be internationally recognized as such on the “Rise As One website.”  So far, only two Football Hero stories have been submitted and uploaded but they are both incredibly touching and show the depth and spread that football can have on the world at large. St. Patrick’s Day Pairing: Murphy’s Stout and Corned Beef with Cabbage

 

Nothing says St. Patrick’s Day quite like beef and beer, the food and succor of our (honorary or real) ancestors.

 

 

The beer is Murphy’s Irish Stout and the beef is corned beef served up with cabbage. Why do these two go so well together? Well, there’s the historical side of it and then there’s the flavorful aspect, as well.

 

A great way to start off in creating complementary dishes is to create dishes with ingredients that are sourced from the same region. Grown from the same dirt and acclimated to the same environment, these food items often are mutually complementary. Although corned beef and cabbage may not be considered a completely traditional Irish meal (at least according to articles like this), Murphy’s Stout is known as the rebel stout throughout Ireland. The beer has been a part of Irish culture since 1856 when the Murphy family first started brewing up the liquid. Now, the Irish stout and the American-Irish dish are both synonymous with St. Patrick ’s Day.

 

Murphy’s shows off the characteristics a true Irish stout with its creamy head and rich black color that is chock full of roasted malt flavor. Available on nitro, it has a light-bodied mouthfeel with little to no carbonation and finishes on a chalky, dry note. These characteristics make it the perfect accompaniment to corned beef and cabbage. The thin mouthfeel of the Irish stout matches the light texture and flavor component of the steamed vegetables. The main attraction – the salty meat – is counterbalanced by the acrid roasted malt flavor and dry finish from the stout. Together, there’s a feast to be had for St. Patrick’s Day.

Winter’s Kryptonite: Arcadia Whitsun Wheat

 

 

Apparently we are in the midst of another winter storm. I don’t believe it, though, because I am sipping on Arcadia Ales Whitsun Wheat. Around these parts we like to call Whitsun winter’s kryptonite and with the very first sip you know it’s true – it’s like sunshine in your mouth.

 

Arcadia Ales Whitsun wheat pours a hazy, vivid orange. The aroma is bready with a hint of fresh-squeezed oranges and slight honey sweetness. The overall flavor profile includes a bright citrus component with light malt undertones and a hint of beehive honey to transition between the two. The mouthfeel is creamy and effervescent with a bright orange finish to top it off.

 

State of mind comes into play, here. Rather than immerse ourselves in SAD syndrome and curse the March snow sadness or discuss if Lake Michigan will ever get above 40 degrees this summer, choose to be delusional. Crack open a can, pop bottles or pour pints of Arcadia Whitsun and prance around in short shorts and sun glasses while wiping imaginary sweat away. It can be summer in your mind, or at least you can trick your taste buds into believing so. Don’t let that white stuff falling from the sky get the better of you. Happy Laughfest day, one and all!

We are incredibly excited for the wide variety of laughtastic events that will be taking place throughout the festival and are especially pleased that two of our brands, Bud Light and Perrin Brewing Co. are the official beer sponsors.

To keep the good times rolling in true beery fashion, we’ve got some tips on how to have the best possible Laughfest experience. Ever.

1. Get your laughs for free.

With the help of Bud Light, there will be a free comedy show that is open to the public on Tuesday, March 11. The featured comedians will be April Macie and Brad William, two nationally renown standup comedians. The fun starts at 8 pm and is free to all 21 years or older- just make sure you visit the Laughfest website to print your free ticket (required for entry). 2. Drink a beer (or two).

Make sure to try out Laughfest Lager – the limited release from Perrin Brewing Co. made especially for Laughfest. It’s a Munich style Helles that is slightly addictive and highly drinkable. That alone is enough to sip on the lager but, in addition, a portion of the proceeds go back to support Laughfest and Gilda’s Club, proving that doing good can taste good too.

 

3.  But be a smart drinker.

Make sure you drink responsibly through the marathon of laughs by choosing sessionable beers. Bud Light and Laughfest Lager are both highly drinkable so you can have more than one without feeling foggy.

Opening Day = National Holiday

Opening Day Petition

Anheuser-Busch is hoping to make Opening Day for America’s national pastime a national holiday this year. In collaboration with “The Wizard” Ozzie Smith they are working on gathering enough petitions to bring to the White House in order to get the day nationally recognized as a holiday. It is literally like Mr. Smith Goest to Washington, except IRL and with more entertaining campaign.

This would mean no more faking sick, sneaking off or simply not show up to work/school every year to catch the first ball toss. If the petitions garners a minimum of 100,000 petitions by March 26 the motion will be put under review by the White House, meaning we’re one step closer to an awesome holiday. Think about it, even for those who don’t closely follow the sport (myself included) there is no reason not to get behind the idea of watching a game and cracking open a Bud.

Stella Food Pairing: Herbed Lamb Chops

Stella Artois Valentine's Day Pairing

 

 

For some, a heart-shaped box of chocolates is good enough to show your love on Valentine’s Day. But to go the extra step, beer is needed to seal the deal in have a special valentine. Coincidentally, beer also makes the perfect substitute for an actual Valentine.

Whatever the case, to make the night special  you can turn to Stella Artois and show up with a pair of bottles, a couple of chalices and a box of chocolates. Better yet, try out the following recipe that cooks with beer to create a beery themed Valentines.

 

Herbed Lamb Chops

 

Directions

  • Remove the lamb from the fridge 1 hour before you plan to cook it.

    TIP: bringing meat to room temperature allows for even cooking. If the meat is cold when you cook it, the outside will be overdone by the time the inside is cooked.
  • Using a mortar and pestle, pound garlic with ¾ teaspoon salt.
  • Add several grinds of pepper, rosemary, and lemon zest and 2 tablespoons olive oil.
  • Slice your lamb into chops, like so.                                  
  • Rub this mixture on both sides of the lamb chops, place in a glass bowl.
  • Let the lamb marinate in fridge for several hours, or overnight.
  • eat a large cast-iron skillet or griddle over high heat for 2 minutes. Swirl in 2 tablespoons olive oil. Sear the lamb for 2 minutes on each side. (Do this step in batches).

 

  • Mint Herb Sauce (Optional)

    In a food processor fitted with a metal blade, pulse to combine mint, scallions, lemon zest and juice, ½ teaspoon salt, and a few grinds of black pepper.

    While the blade is spinning, drizzle in the olive oil.

    Taste for seasoning.

Serve the lamb alongside your mint-herb sauce. It  pairs perfectly with Stella Artois and a candle lit dinner.

Budweiser Ads Win SuperBowl

The Seattle Seahawks may have trounced the Denver Broncos but Budweiser came out as the real winner of the Super Bowl with their nostalgic and touching commercials.

 

A Hero’s Welcome served as the other commercial put on by Budweiser, which featured the real-life surprise and welcome home for Lt. Chuck Nadd. The famous Clydesdales once again made an appearance in the parade in his hometown welcoming him home.

 

 

 

The Puppy Love ad brought back one of my favorite childhood movies, the Fox and the Hound, with the unlikely friendship theme. After catching myself singing along to the song and gaping at the Clydesdale jump fences the ending came as a humorous and sweet surprise when the other Clydesdales came together to keep the best buds together.

Nachos and Beer: Your Super Bowl Pairing

As the Super Bowl approaches there is only one thing on my mind – nachos. Maybe it’s multiple types available or maybe it’s the cheese. Whatever the cause, nachos are the ultimate Super Bowl snack. This crispy, cheesey, spicy and salty snack requires a beverage that will be its equal in taste and overall awesomeness. The nachos require a beer (or three) that pairs perfectly with the dish. Depending on personal nacho preferences, here is a list of beer styles and brands to pair with the ultimate Super Bowl snack.

 

 

Classic Cheese Nachos with Jalapenos and Salsa

Pairing: Pale Lagers (Stella Artois, Oskar Blues Mama’s Little Yella Pils)

Gooey and cheesy with a bright heat from the jalapenos, these nachos require a lager with a complex body. Light hoppiness from the lager will withstand the flavor without overemphasizing the heat. Instead, the clean finish will cut through the cheese gooeyness while higher combination levels with combat and balance out the spiciness.  If you want to take it a step further, check out this recipe for beer cheese made with Stella Artois.

 

BBQ Nachos

Pairing: Ambers (New Belgium Fat Tire) and Dunkels (Frankenmuth Dunkel)

Often made with pulled pork, BBQ nachos combine gooey cheese with sweet and tangy BBQ sauce covering dark meat. The sweet maltiness complements the BBQ flavors while also adding to dark and meaty quality. The clean finish of the dunkel and the dry, slightly bitter finish of the amber both work to dig through the cheesiness.

Pairing: Pale Ales (Summit EPA) and IPAs (Perrin IPA)

So many toppings are on these nachos that your chip is in danger of breaking. Ground beef, cheddar cheese, lettuce, olives, salsa, onion, sour cream and avocado are all common toppings on these nachos that boast a complex, spicy, salty and tangy flavor. The hops in both pale ales and IPAs complement the tang in the sour cream while the effervescence and bitter end clear the palette for the next bite. This weekend, the frozen water around Reeds Lake will be full of the best kind of winter fun - hockey. 

Labatt Blue Pond Hockey returns for another round of pond hockey that will last from Friday until Sunday. the championing team will win bragging rights for an entire year, as part of the longstanding tradition. With weather looking to be in the below freezing range with a bit of sun and snow throughout the day, it will be a perfect wintry combination for a January tournament. In the age of collecting, cellaring and coveting beers to savor at our leisure, why make and make a beer that is designed to go against those hobbies? Well, Stone Brewing Co. is doing something fantastic for the craft drinkers out there – it’s creating a tangible and purposeful teaching moment, one pint at a time with Enjoy By IPA. This is the next level for beer drinkers out there that highlights the importance of pure freshness in a brew.

 

This Enjoy By IPA is made to be drank by February 14, 2014, which is a great way to celebrate Valentine’s Day in my opinion. It is a double IPA with a whopping hit of citrus and floral hops. Clocking in with 9.4% ABV and 88 IBUs it is a very dry and bitter brew that conveys a dank hoppiness in the head, with malts that on first sip smooth the way for a hop overload. It finishes dry and bitter, with a slight hint of alcohol warmth in the throat.

Budweiser Beef Stew

There’s this thing happening right now that they’re calling a Polar Vortex, with symptoms that include snow and air that vaporizes boiling water. The city is advising everyone to stay inside. Survival from the “Sowpocalypse,” or what some of us Yoopers like to refer to simply as winter-no hashtag necessary, requires a queue of movies and beer lined up, a cozy blanket (or two) and a steamy hot stew either on the stove or by your side. To help ensure a boozy survival, here’s a recipe for a beer beef stew that combines Budweiser, beef and comfort food all into one bowlful.

Budweiser Beef Stew

  • ·         3 T Olive Oil
  • ·         1 T Butter
  • ·         2 lbs Stew Meat
  • ·         1 Medium Onion, Diced
  • ·         3 Cloves Minced Garlic
  • ·         1 12z Budweiser Can
  • ·         4 cups Beef Stock
  • ·         2 Cups Water
  • ·         1 T Worcestershire Sauce
  • ·         2 T Carmelized Tomato Paste*
  • ·         ½ Tsp Paprika
  • ·         ½ tsp Kosher Salt
  • ·         Ground Black Pepper
  • ·         4 Whole Carrots, Peeled and Sliced
  • ·         4 Whole New Potatoes, quartered

 

*Carmelized Tomato Paste is the easiest thing in the world to make and adds incredible flavor-once I learned this trick I never looked back. To make: heat about 1 T of olive oil in a pan, add the tomato paste. Stir frequently and cook for about 5 minutes or until the paste turns a deeper red. Freeze the rest for later use.

 

Step 1:  Crack open a can of Budweiser. Drink. Now you’re ready.

 

Step 2: Heat oil and butter in a large pot. Brown meat. Remove meat from pot and set aside.

 

Step 3: Add diced unions to pot. Cook 2-3 minutes, stirring frequently then add garlic and cook for another minute. Pour in the Budweiser and beef stock then add Worcestershire, carmelized tomato paste, paprika, salt, pepper and suger. Add in the beef. Stir. Sip your Bud. Cover and simmer for 1 ½ - 2 hours. If the liquid cooks down too much, add more Bud.

 

Step 4: Enjoy your Budweiser and start working through your Netflix queue.

 

Step 5: Add the carrots and potatoes. Cover and cook for 30 more minutes. If too much liquid is absorbed add a cup of hot water at a time. Taste and adjust seasoning as need.

 

Step 6: Ladle yourself a bowl and grab another Bud. Stay warm and survive the Polar Vortex, “Snowpocalypse,” winter or whatever you like to call it.

From the brewery's name, that honors a historic figure from the American Revolution, to the brewery's own history, as a part of the craft beer revolution, Samuel Adams always has had a bit of rebellion in their nature. That is celebrated with their newest release, Rebel IPA

 

Rebel IPA is a West Coast style IPA brewed with all American hops. It pours a bright copper color with a heady grapefruit hop aroma, thanks to the doses of Chinook, Centennial, Simcoe and Amarillo hops that are in the brew. The classic, all-American style is well-balanced while still providing that hopped-up bitterness the style is renown for. At the same time, the beer rebels against the huge hop bombs that can leave the palette feeling assaulted. Rather, it highlight's the hop flavor while still retaining a smooth and crisp finish. Try one out and see if you're a rebel, too.
