A Peak at Yeast

08-26-2014
Tags: Budweiser, Beer, Yeast,

With a product made out of four simple ingredients, each component of a beer is equally important. That being said, yeast is definitely the soul of the beer. It is what takes simple ingredients and warps it into liquid perfection. Much like with sourdough bread, yeast can be cultivated so a brewery is able to develop their yeast strain, ensuring it is available for each new brew.

Adolphus Busch understood the important of quality ingredients stating “You can only make a good thing out of good products; therefore, stick to the motto that the best ingredient is not too good for our beer.” Anheuser Busch followed through on that motto when it came to yeast and did not underestimate the importance role yeast played in cultivating a flavorful beer. In fact, since 1876 Budweiser has used the same proprietary yeast strain in their iconic brew to ensure no matter the batch each sip is distinctly Budweiser good.

Budweiser’s commitment to its yeast strain is no accident – yeast can contribute over 600 separate compounds to a beer’s flavor and aroma. It does so by directly affecting the hops via absorption of iso-alpha acids and in the way it metabolizes malt.

With this in mind, raise your pint to the soul of beer, yeast, which plays such an important role in each sip.

first week of October, with launch events scheduled for October 8-11

August 20, 2014 – Bend, Oregon – Deschutes Brewery announced today its craft beers will be available in Michigan beginning October 6th. The Oregon-based brewery will partner with West Side Beer Distributing for distribution of its beers in the Grand Rapids, Kalamazoo and Lansing areas.

Stacy Denbow, expansion manager for the brewery, said, “We’ve seen a great amount of excitement leading up to our Michigan launch, our last major expansion for the 2014 year. Our fans in Michigan are passionate about their craft beer and we’re looking forward to them being able to get Deschutes in their home state.”

Beer is slated to be available October 6th in the three western Michigan cities, with launch events scheduled for October 8-11th. Initially, Deschutes Brewery will offer Mirror Pond Pale Ale, Black Butte Porter, the nation’s number one selling craft porter, Inversion IPA, and its winter seasonal, Jubelale. The beers will be available in 6-packs (12-oz bottles) and draft.

Denbow continued, “We’ve been preparing for expanding our distribution area over the past few years, but we always want to make sure we can provide adequate supply to our entire footprint. We are keeping a close eye on capacity, and that’s why we are focusing only on the western portion of Michigan at this point.”

Deschutes launched in Ohio, Kentucky, central and western Pennsylvania, and Wisconsin earlier this year. The western portion of Michigan rounds out the brewery’s geographic expansion for the year.

Shark Week: Movies and Beer Pairing

08-14-2014

My favorite time of the year has returned. Shark Week is back in all its jawtastic, bloody gore and glory. From the beginning, Shark Week and I were fated to be together. My childhood best friend’s initials spell out J.A.W. for one. That same friend also convinced a very young and naïve version of me that bull sharks could and did lurk in the waters of Lake Superior since she read that some sharks could swim into freshwater. It was a terrifying and wonderful time that laid the foundation for my adoration of shark week.  To make the week even better, take a break from fiction, or semi-fiction, and rejoice in completely preposterous shark themed movies paired with a brew for mental lubrication.

Best Beers to pair with shark movies

Sharknado with New Belgium Brewing Snapshot

The ridiculous hit that featured man eating sharks falling from the sky managed to incur a viral explosion when it first came out, much in the same way that Snapshot Wheat from New Belgium Brewing Co. became the talk of the town on social media. Besides, a light-hearted movie deserves a light, easy drinking beer to go along with it.

Jaws 1, 2, 3 and Jaws the Revenge with Goose Island Endless IPA

The Jaws series is a rite of passage it seems, but a Jaws marathon of will require buckets (or at least more than one) of beer to sit through the buckets of fake blood on screen. Endless IPA from Goose Island is the perfect session ale to accompany the marathon.

Deep Blue Sea Magic Hat Wilhelm Scream

Named after a much-used Hollywood sound effect, Wilhelm Scream from Magic Hat Brewing Co. will ease the terrors brought on while viewing Deep Blue Sea with its rich pumpkin pie flavors.

Finding Nemo with Arcadia Ales Rupunzel IPA

Although with sharing the name of an old terrifying fairytale about turnips and women with hair way too long, Rapunzel IPA is a brew made to be enjoyed by those of legal age. In the same manner, Finding Nemo appeals to the same demographic with its slick jokes.

Open Water with Perrin Raspberry Blonde

The scene from Open Water with the blood spreading through the water is embedded in my brain for eternity. Drink a Perrin Raspberry Blonde, which has a vivid pink hue that is complementary to the scene on the screen.

Swamp Shark with Oskar Blues Dales Pale Ale

Its swamp land and there’s a giant and scary looking shark attacking hillbillies. You’re going to need 19.2 ounces of Dale’s Pale Ale in a cold can to set yourself up for this epic film. Crack it open and enjoy.

International #IPADay

08-07-2014

Happy International IPA Day!

What better way to celebrate than with a handy bit of IPA knowhow, paired with a nice bitter pint (or two)?

Apple of Your Eye

08-05-2014

A is for apple.

An apple a day keeps the doctor away.

How about them apples?

The fruit is not only an favorite American produce, it’s gone so far as to infiltrate our language. Now, the apple is reaching even further with beer. No longer satisfied with the cider category (which is, individually, a huge growing category) the apple is launching itself forward with Bud Light Lime Apple-AHHH-Rita.

Apple-AHHH-Rita is the newest release from the Rita family, perfect timing as we approach apple picking season. This limited edition offering brings bright and crisp apple flavor to sync with the light and refreshing flavor of Bud Light Lime to create a unique twist on the apple margarita. Best served poured over ice, Apple-AHH-Rita is 8% ABV and will be available until the beginning of November.

Check it out  - after first sip it will sure to be the new apple of your eye.
