2014 Beer Mashup

12-09-2014

As the year comes to an end, it’s time to celebrate all the fantastic beers we’ve discovered over the course of the year. Much like the much-anticipated pop music mashup, each style is a deliciously good way to remember the year individually, although we don’t suggest mashing them all together into a liquid hot mess to choke down.

New Belgium Brewing Co. Snapshot

Snapshot Wheat hallmarked the spring with its bright and tangy flavor. This unfiltered wheat ale arrived during the throes of the Polar Vortex, bringing with it a bright, citrusy hope for the future. Since then it has yet to disappoint with each tart sip.

Samuel Adams Rebel IPA

The release of Rebel IPA dared us to try a new IPA from one of the godfathers of craft beer. The IPA showcased the scope of Samuel Adam’s brewing prowess with its well-balanced hop-forward presence, making it the second best-selling IPA in the country in just a few short months.

Stone Brewing Co. EnjoyBy IPA

The EnjoyBy IPA series from Stone Brewing highlighted the educational component of drinking, in this case the sooner you drink it, the better. Brewed to be consumed within thirty days, each style in the EnjoyBy series showcases the unique characteristics of the hops that result in such a freshly bitter beer.

Arcadia Rapunzel Wheat IPA

Arcadia Ales helped bring a newly popular style to the Michigan consciousness with Rapunzel Wheat IPA. The ale combined the creamy and smooth mouthfeel of a wheat beer with bright citrus hop bitterness. Representing the Michigan beer landscape even more, the beer incorporates locally-sourced hops.

Right Brain Brewery Smooth Operator

The cream ale from Right Brain Brewery came just in time for summer, providing an exceptionally flavored, light-bodied “lawnmower” beer option for the Michigan craft beer sector. The easy drinking beer in the 16-ounce can soon became (and remained) a top hit for those who like to laze the day away with a cold one in hand.

Traveler Beer Jolly Shandy

The newest beer project from Alan Newman, Traveler Beer, brought a brand new option to the Grand Rapids area with its craft shandy lineup. When Jacko, a pumpkin shandy, showed up on the scene just in time for witching season, beer drinkers learned how innovative the style could be.

Shocktop Shockolate

Roasted cocoa nibs brought a rich, roasted flavor to this Belgian wheat style ale. The style came in just time for a decadent chocolate treat during the cold season.

Deschutes Brewery

After much anticipation, the 6th largest craft brewery in the country brought its wares to the West Michigan market. Black Butte Porter, the country's best-selling porter, Mirror Pond Pale Ale, Inversion IPA and Jubelale all launched the market in October. After a few months of getting to know these well-balanced and tasty beers, new seasonals and beer styles will soon be available as Michigan continues to get to know (and love) one of the best nationally-ranked craft breweries.

Perrin Brewing Killing Craft

After two long years of anticipation, Perrin Brewing launched its first packaged beer on the Michigan beer scene with the super limited bottle series. The Killing Craft series began with the bourbon barrel aged duo, Kill Em All and With Kindness, which started off this series that is focused on highlighting the artistry of crafting beer.

Arcadia Ales Rapunzel

07-09-2014

Beach, travel and beer – there’s a lot to celebrate in Michigan this month.

As the month rolls by, the pints will be pouring as the state celebrates its official craft beer month. One week has already passed us by – it’s time to double down on the craft beer celebrations over the next three weeks. To maximize on this state sanctioned time of drinking, check out the latest and greatest from Arcadia Ales.

Rapunzel is a tasty twist on the classic fairy tale. This time, instead of handsome princes falling from high towers your taste buds will fall in love with the wheat IPA. Brewed with Michigan hops, Rapunzel is a creamy wheat-based ale with notes of citrus and pineapple hops on the nose with a bit of bready malt sweetness when the liquid first hits your tongue. The bright hop profile adds a balancing bitterness towards the end, with a crisp and dry finish. This beaut clocks in at 5.8% ABV and is available in our Grand Rapids and Lansing locations, both on draft and in 12 ounce bottles.

Hot Dogs and Beer Food Pairing

03-25-2014

Hot Dogs and Beer Pairing

Opening Day is around the corner! This is great news for all the baseball fans out there and for people like me who love a great excuse to eat more hot dogs. Plus, thanks to the efforts of Budweiser and all those signatures there is officially a petition out there to make Opening Day a national holiday, which means you should most definitely eat another hot dog in celebration.

Baseball and hot dogs…the only thing missing is the beer. But not for long when so many styles can pair up with ultimate dogs out there. Beer and hot dogs and baseball are the ultimate pairing. Don’t believe me? Try out these then see what you think.

Chili Dog with Arcadia Whitsun

Let the full chili experience takeover with this hotdog while sipping on a Whitsun from Arcadia Ales. The wheat ale will add a light citrus note while the carbonation serves as a palette cleanser.

Chicago Dog with Stella Artois

A beef frank topped with yellow mustard, onions, pickle relish, tomatoes, pepper and celery salt and stuffed onto a poppy seed bun needs to take center stage. Let it by pairing it with a light lager that serves as a refresher between bites.

New Yorker with Sam Adams Summer Ale

Spicy brown mustard and sauerkraut are balanced out with the light-bodied summer ale from Sam Adams. A bit of pepper spice and hops balance out the full flavors while the hint of lemon peel adds a brightening component.

Bacon Cheese dog with Perrin Brewing IPA

Meat meets meat in this dog covered in cheese and topped with bacon crumbles. The classic American-style IPA from Perrin Brewing boasts enough bitter hops to cut through the cheesiness to balance out the smoked bacon.

Winter's Kryptonite

03-12-2014

Winter’s Kryptonite: Arcadia Whitsun Wheat

Apparently we are in the midst of another winter storm. I don’t believe it, though, because I am sipping on Arcadia Ales Whitsun Wheat. Around these parts we like to call Whitsun winter’s kryptonite and with the very first sip you know it’s true – it’s like sunshine in your mouth.

Arcadia Ales Whitsun wheat pours a hazy, vivid orange. The aroma is bready with a hint of fresh-squeezed oranges and slight honey sweetness. The overall flavor profile includes a bright citrus component with light malt undertones and a hint of beehive honey to transition between the two. The mouthfeel is creamy and effervescent with a bright orange finish to top it off.

State of mind comes into play, here. Rather than immerse ourselves in SAD syndrome and curse the March snow sadness or discuss if Lake Michigan will ever get above 40 degrees this summer, choose to be delusional. Crack open a can, pop bottles or pour pints of Arcadia Whitsun and prance around in short shorts and sun glasses while wiping imaginary sweat away. It can be summer in your mind, or at least you can trick your taste buds into believing so. Don’t let that white stuff falling from the sky get the better of you. Choose Whitsun and deny winter the pleasure.

Beer Sixer for Thanksgiving

Mixed beer sixer for Thanksgiving

Beer, historically, has been the go-to gift to for those that lack any sort of culinary inclination and still need to contribute to the holiday feast. The joy that the sight of sixer of beer can elicit from the host’s face is well worth the effort it takes to select a specific beer. But why wait stop at one? This year, make an impression with a sixer featuring individually chosen beers that each enhance the delicious fanfare of Thanksgiving.

Rochester Mills Milkshake Stout

Dark and rich chocolate notes make this beer like a dessert in a bottle, ensuring that no one will recall that you forgot to bring the pie.

Stella Artois Cidre

With an effervescent body and crisp finish this is a delectable twist on the typical champagne toast.

Summit Saga IPA

An assertive bitterness and resiny, grapefruit aroma make this IPA bold enough to serve as an accent to herbed and full-flavored dishes.

Shiner Cheer

A seasonal favorite, this ale is brewed with peaches and pecans that lend it a unique sweetness full of dark roasted nut flavor making it a perfect accompaniment to pecan pie.

Brooklyn Lager

A remarkably crisp, dry-hopped lager that goes well with roasted turkey, buttery mashed potatoes and herbed stuffing, making it the versatile drink of choice all meal long.

Arcadia Loch Down Scotch Ale

Roasted malt and caramel notes join a biscuit aroma to finish crisply. Pair this with mashed potatoes and gravy or roasted turkey to complement the richness.

Arrrgh! Talk Like a Pirate and Drink Shipwreck Porter!

Ahoy there me mateys! Ay, ‘tis National Talk Like a Pirate Day and the official Shipwreck Porter release day!

I happen to love celebrating holidays, especially ones that incorporate reasons to drink beer.  I fully intend to celebrate Pirate Day to the max, even if it means the warehouse crew is weirded out by me calling ‘em all scalawags. If they can’t appreciate the inner pirate in me then they can swim with the sharks, if ya know what I mean. For those swashbucklers ready to go full pirate, include Shipwreck Porter from Arcadia Ales in the plan. Ye inner pirate and palette will thank you.

Shipwreck Porter, a Baltic porter from the reserve series from Arcadia Ales, is so good it will be sure to shiver your timbers. The brew is aged for 12 months in 10-year-old Kentucky bourbon oak barrels in the depths of some of Michigan’s abandoned mines. It pours a dark and alluring hue, with a hint of herbal hop aroma. Robust malt flavor is accented by vanilla, cocoa and coffee undertones with a warming alcoholic finish. Avast! With a 99 rating on Ratebeer, It’s a brew to bring a tear to the eye of any ol’ salty dog.

Want more ways to parley as a pirate? Here ya go!
